General tips:
- Before starting with the training your dog should always be warmed up.
- Never let your dog practise on a full stomach and do not feed your dog right after the training.
- Do not expect too much of your dog and challenge it slowly.
- Make this sport fitting to your dog, concerning the dog’s age and size.
- Give your dog the possibility to rest during the training units.
- Make sure that there is always a bowl with fresh water for your dog.
- Please note that the dog’s training should always finish with a positive experience.
Important: Pet your dog and give it a reward during the training - this motivates and supports the trust.
The training can start:
The agility seesaw is the most difficult hurdle with contact zone. The dog does not only have to learn walking over a plank, but to balance the pivot point.
In the beginning the training should be carried out with a second person. Each person should accompany the dog step by step on both sides of the seesaw, so that the dog can not jump off or even fall off it.
Please take care that your dog does not jump off the seesaw, until it touched the ground again. To do so, let your dog sit or stand for a short while on the green-coloured area (contact zone).
In case of careful and fearful dogs the plank should be first put down on the ground. Lead your dog over the plank several times, so that it can get used to it.
Training:
Pose yourself with the leashed dog and the second person in front of the agility seesaw. With one hand hold your dog tightly on the leash. The other hand keeps the goodies: In the beginning reward your dog with a goody for each taken step and encourage it to step onto the seesaw (the second person walks alongside the seesaw). Follow your dog to the seesaw’s pivot point and let it stay there for a little while. The dog should now learn to find out the individual pivot point of the seesaw and to walk down again slowly. The helper should hold the plank and slowly lower it to the ground, so that the dog will not become scared. Reward your dog with a goody while it pushes the seesaw down under its own weight.
After the plank has touched the ground close this exercise with the dog’s pausing on the contact zone in a sitting position. Keep standing next to your dog in an upright position.
Repeat this exercise with the dog walking on your left side as well as on your right side.
After your dog walks over the seesaw easily, you may train without a second person.
In order to challenge your dog properly, you can raise the speed step by step and to extend the physical distance between you and your dog as well. Please note that each exercise should close with the dog touching the contact zone.
If your dog likes the training with the agility seesaw, you can challenge it by an agility slalom (item no 3206). This agility equipment teaches the dog a precise shift in direction and raises power of concentration. The agility slalom is one of the most difficult agility equipment.
